The famous bullfighter Escamillo arrives, and everyone is star struck. They need to deliver their smuggled loot and want the three women to join them. He tells her how much he loves her.

A trumpet signals that the soldiers must report back to the barracks. Before their fight progresses, the smugglers burst in and tie up Zuniga. Late at night in a deserted place outside of Seville, the smugglers carry their goods through the mountains.

She tells him to go home to his mother. The women join the smugglers on their trip to the city to distract any guards. The bullet has barely missed Escamillo who is there to see Carmen. The Toreador claims the two of them are in love. And can there be an escape from this life for her — with him, with the glamorous Escamillo here a rodeo star , or is she fated to die?

View photos ». Phillip Rhodes as Escamillo and Chrystal E. The habanera was a dance brought back to Spain from Cuba, characterised by a repeated dotted rhythm. Bizet wanted the score to have an authentic Spanish flavour. However, his habanera turned out to be based not on a genuine folk melody as he had believed, but a much more recent cabaret song!

This number uses flamenco rhythms. But as well as cracking sing-along melodies, Carmen is also known for vividly painting the emotions of the characters in the music. Carmen was written by French composer Georges Bizet — He would never know how Carmen — still today by far his best known work — would take the world by storm…. Controversy continued into rehearsals — the chorus complained that they had to actually act and fight! Carmen finally premiered in March , but did not go down well.

The audience was shocked by its blatant sexuality, on-stage murder, portrayal of crime, and above all its unconventional heroine, who was most definitely not a woman of virtue pretty much everything, then! The opera was, however, much better received in Vienna later that year, and from there its popularity spread like wildfire, premiering in Brussels, London, Barcelona, New York, St Petersburg and more over the next three years.

She leaves for Seville with Escamillo to see him fight in the bullring. She proudly joins him in his triumphant arrival, but stays outside the ring when he enters. Created by Jacques Bouhy.
