Figure skater rotating on ice rink is an example of rotary motion about an axis that passes through the body. General motion is the most common type of motion in sport and physical exercise. Running and walking are among typical examples. In this case the trunk moves in linear motion as a result of rotary motions of individual segments of extremities.

Riding a bicycle is another example of general motion. If we resolve general motion into linear and rotary motions, it is easier to analyze. Motion can be defined as the process of changing position or place of a body in space. For example: When the position of a car changes with time, we say that the car is moving or that car is in motion. If an object is fairly fast, then its movement or motion can be observed easily. But if an object moves very slowly, then it becomes difficult to observe its movement immediately.

For example: A wrist watch has three hands i. But the minutes hand and hours hand of the watch move quite slow, so their movement can not be observed easily. When an object is stationary not moving , it is said to be at rest e. Even the same object can be at rest or in motion at different times.

For example , when a car is stationary not moving , it is said to be at rest. But when the car is moving, it is said to be in motion. Motion in a straight line is called Rectilinear motion, e. So, the movement of a bullet fired from a gun is an example of Rectilinear motion.

Rectilinear motion takes place in fixed direction. When an object moves along a circular path, it is called circular motion. The motion which repeats itself after regular intervals of time, is called periodic motion.

A pendulum consists of a small metal ball also called as bob suspended by a long thread from a rigid support, such that the bob is free to swing back and forth. Initially the pendulum is at position B. If we pull the bob a pendulum a little to the left side up to position B and then release it, the pendulum bob starts moving like a swing between positions A and C. The swinging of pendulum bob from position A to C, and back to A is called one vibration.

The musical instrument such as guitar or a sitar have stretched strings or stretched wires which produce sound when plucked. When the stretched strings or stretched wires of a sitar or guitar is plucked, it starts vibrating to and fro and shows periodic motion. Physics encompasses a great many topics, but at heart, it is the study of how things move. At the "macro" level concerning everyday and visible things, as opposed to "micro," or atomic and subatomic, phenomena many physicists and engineers classify motion into four basic types: linear, rotary, reciprocating and oscillating.

Machines with moving parts exhibit one or more of these. Note that these are not to be confused with hard-fast laws of motion; they are accepted in many conventions, but by no means represent ironclad categories.

Astronomers, for example, often discuss motion in terms of revolution, rotation, cosmic expansion and orbiting systems. The four kinds of mechanical motion are nevertheless a good starting point to learn how things get from one point to another in physical space in fully familiar ways.

Linear motion, sometimes more broadly called translational motion, is simply the shifting of an object from one point in space to another.

An arrow shot from a bow undergoes linear motion. Many objects experience more than one type of motion simultaneously, with the predominant form being used as the overall descriptor. For example, a baseball thrown from a pitcher to the catcher 60 feet away has undergone translational motion, but the ball has likely rotated a number of times along its path from the pitcher's mound to home plate. When something rotates, roughly speaking, it spins around in a circle.

A child standing in one spot on a playground and spinning in a circle until she reaches her original starting point has undergone rotational motion, but she need not complete the circle for this to be true; they key point is that her body has rotated about a well-defined geometric axis — in this case, one running from the top of her head to the ground at her feet. Rotation is the foundation of automotive transport. For a car as a whole to be translated from, say, New York City to Los Angeles, its wheels must rotate around the car's axles, and many of the internal parts of the automobile's combustion engine rotate as they do work.
